Summary of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000
1. Introduction
The Information Technology Act, 2000 is India’s primary law governing cyber activities. It regulates the use of computers, computer systems, and networks, along with data and electronic information.
2. Key Objectives of the IT Act, 2000
• Legal recognition for electronic transactions (e-commerce).
• Regulation of electronic authentication (digital/electronic signatures).
• Prevention of cybercrimes and defining penalties.
• Liability of network service providers in case of violations.
• Facilitation of e-governance (electronic filing of documents with Government agencies).
3. IT Amendment Act, 2008
• Passed in Lok Sabha: 22nd December 2008
• Passed in Rajya Sabha: 23rd December 2008
• Received Presidential Assent: 5th February 2009
• Came into effect: 27th October 2009
Why was the Amendment introduced?
• The original IT Act, 2000 did not cover new security threats.
